How to Check the Oil in Your Toyota
No matter if you’re driving a Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, or Corolla, you need to prioritize taking care of the vehicle’s oil. That valuable fluid bears many responsibilities, such as lubricating and cooling the powertrain. Learn how to check the oil in your vehicle from our Service Department at Fremont Toyota, so you can determine whether it has the right quantity and condition for your travels.
Getting Ready
Before checking your Toyota’s oil, take a few minutes to prepare so you get an accurate reading. Make sure the vehicle is turned off and has had time to cool down, or at least hasn’t been running recently. That way, the liquid can make its way back to the reservoir, and the vehicle can cool down, lowering your chance of getting burned. You should also be certain that you’ve parked the car on a level surface. Doing so prevents you from getting a false reading for your vehicle. While you’re at it, get a napkin or a shop towel to use for cleaning off the dipstick throughout the procedure.
Checking the Quality and Condition
Now it’s time to get a reading on the oil in your Toyota model. Start by consulting your Owner’s Manual to find the location of the dipstick, and then remove it from its tube. Wipe the dipstick clean with a paper towel or cloth, then reinsert it all the way back into the tube. Pull it out again and look at the oil level on the tip of the dipstick. Most Toyota dipsticks have two marks or holes that are marked Low or Full. Your oil should be somewhere between those levels. While checking the level, also pay attention to the oil’s condition. Clean oil is typically amber or light brown and smooth in texture. If you notice dark sludge, metal flakes, gritty particles, or a milky or foamy appearance, this may indicate contamination or engine problems. Contact us if you have any questions or run into any difficulties with this process.
Next Steps
Even if the oil level and condition look fine, it’s a good habit to make a note of the date and mileage when the oil was checked so you can track maintenance over time and spot changes more easily. Keep in mind that newer Toyota models may have longer oil change intervals, especially if they use synthetic oil. Yet, you’ll still want to check the oil condition yourself to ensure that no contaminants have made their way inside. Older or high-mileage vehicles may burn oil more quickly or show signs of wear, so they may need more frequent monitoring and oil changes. If the oil level is low or the oil appears dirty or contaminated, it’s important to schedule an oil change as soon as possible to help prevent engine wear or damage.
Process for Checking Your Toyota’s Oil
- Park your Toyota on a level surface and make sure the engine is off and cooled down
- Open the hood and locate the dipstick, usually marked with a bright-colored handle
- Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, then fully reinsert it
- Remove the dipstick again and check that the oil level falls between the low and full marks
- Look at the oil’s color and texture to check for dirt, debris, or contamination
- Add oil or schedule an oil change if the level is low or the oil looks dirty

“ I received excellent service from Service Advisor Antonio Vazquez today. I came in for a 100,000-mile maintenance service for a 2016 Prius and he took care of it, no problems. He also provided a shuttle service via Lyft to bring me home and pick me up when the service was completed. Please note that this service only applies if you live within 5-6 miles from Fremont Toyota. My advice here to anyone doing maintenance is to be on top of it and READ YOUR MAINTENANCE MANUAL. I cannot stress this enough. This way, you can avoid the unnecessary services that you don't need. If you blindly accept and agree with everything they offer to you, you can be in for some very expensive invoices. Because I knew what was only necessary for my vehicle, I was able to slash 2/3 of the cost because their system is programmed to offer you EVERYTHING, even if you don't need it. Imagine my shock when they quoted me $1200 for everything but because I knew what was just needed, I whittled it down to $400, and then applied a 30% off coupon on top of it. Some key points for maintenance on a 2016 Prius: 1. Oil and filter change every 10,000 miles or 1 year. 2. Engine filter and air cabin filter change every 30,000 miles or 3 years. 3. Engine coolant change at 100,000 miles or 10 years. Replace at 50,000 miles or 5 years thereafter. 4. Spark plugs change only at 120,000 miles or 12 years. Replace again in another 120,000 miles or 12 years. 5. Hybrid Inverter coolant change at 150,000 miles or 15 years. Replace at 50,000 miles or 5 years thereafter. Thanks again for your help, Antonio, and I'm sorry for declining the other unnecessary services. ”

“ My apt at 4pm.. Car oil change at 5:45pm.... Dang, been nice if rep told me that ahead when checked in 4pm. Waste of time! ”
“ Really bad service. Instead of one day, the job took them 7 days. They said they will cover my rental car, but I am still waiting for my check after multiple weeks. Go to a different location where they know what they are doing. ”
“ Took more than 3 hrs for oil change. After the jobs was done it take approximately 30 minutes to track down the car location by review the cameras footage. The appointment was meaningless because the customer still waiting for long times. Very disappointed. ”
